Blog #3: Buffy, Buffy, Buffy

I chose to continue with the Buffy episodes and I watched episode number 3, “Teacher’s Pet.” This episode was interesting and did not really have a huge main problem that could be directly applied to our daily lives. The problem in this episode has to deal with the fact that being a teacher’s pet is not always a good thing. In the episode, Zander who is one of Buffy’s friends goes gaga over their new substitute biology teacher, who is in fact a preying mantis in human form. She uses her beauty along with other features to get the boys in her class to fall in lust with her so that she can use them to mate with and create more killing mantises. Zander actually goes to her house and is almost killed, and this is all due to the fact he considered himself a teacher’s pet. This is an example of how being a teacher’s pet isn’t always a good thing. I think it is trying to say that being a teacher’s pet will not get you very far and that in the end you might get in trouble, possibly life threating trouble in Zander’s case, that is. It is basically saying that you should also do your homework (Buffy did not) so you understand what is going on in class and might be able to help with a real life problem. If Buffy had done her homework, maybe she would have been able to stop it right away before Zander was put in danger. So, overall this episode is telling us, in a fun and dramatic way, that being a teacher’s pet is not always good, but doing your homework is! (I know it may seem redundant and stupid, but it is the only major theme that I could elaborate on.)

Blog #2: Buffy

I chose to watch episode 3 from season one of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I really enjoyed this show and episode because it deals with vampires and other mythical characters along with issues that are common in our daily lives. The main issue that was present throughout this episode was that a mom was trying to live through her daughter, literally. I feel that this issue comes up a lot in our lives as teenagers and young adults because our parents, more so older parents, are trying to revisit their youth. I know that this is an issue especially with older parents because they did not have some of the sports, activities, or opportunities that are offered to us today and they chose to live through their children by encouraging them to join all these different clubs and sports. I know with my parents, my mom especially, kind of pushed, well encouraged me to try all these new sports and to get involved with many different clubs. I know that she only wanted what was best for me, and don’t get me wrong, I am glad she did that and still does because I would have never have made some of the friends I have or experienced all the new things. I am glad that my mom did not try to live through me literally by performing witchcraft!
In a way, my mom and I have a similar relationship to Buffy and her mom because my mom sometimes does not understand teenagers or the new advances today. Overall, I thought it was interesting how the show incorporated a common issue into the episode and made it more dramatic. I feel that it really grabbed my attention and made me feel a part of the show since I could relate to the character Amy. I am excited to see what Buffey has to come up against in the next episode!

Blog #1: Who am I?

My name is Emily Spetka and I am a freshman at Ohio State. I am 19 years old and my birthday is Feb. 6.  I am from Toledo, Ohio and I attended St. Ursula Academy for high school. I did a few different sports in high school, such as dance, both hip hop and lyrical, horseback riding, and crew. I own my own horse named Hunter, and I also have 3 dogs along with various other pets. Some hobbies that I enjoy are traveling, wakeboarding, and cooking. I have traveled to Hawaii, Italy, and was a foreign exchange student in Barcelona, Spain part of my senior year. I plan on traveling to Greece, Germany, and other places during the next few years. I also enjoy spending time with my family, especially at my cottage on Devil’s Lake in Michigan. I enjoy the warm weather, and anything that has to do with the water. I am a very active person, but I also enjoy relaxing. I am very shy at first, but as you get to know me I can be very outgoing. I am very ambitious and love to learn new things. My major is Bio and I hope to some day become a physician/surgeon. Both of my parents are in the medical field and that has inspired me to follow in their footsteps. I have a younger bother, who is 17 years old and his name is Matthew. For the most part, my brother and I get along. I would say that I am a very understanding and supportive person. I care deeply for others and am always willing help others no matter what. My family and friends have said that I have a good heart and that they can trust me with anything. I am a big activist in the fight against breast cancer and plan on getting more involved throughout my college career. My favorite colors are pink and turquoise. I love Italian food, sweets, and milk. I am also a new member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and plan on holding a position in there in the future.
