I chose to watch episode 3 from season one of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I really enjoyed this show and episode because it deals with vampires and other mythical characters along with issues that are common in our daily lives. The main issue that was present throughout this episode was that a mom was trying to live through her daughter, literally. I feel that this issue comes up a lot in our lives as teenagers and young adults because our parents, more so older parents, are trying to revisit their youth. I know that this is an issue especially with older parents because they did not have some of the sports, activities, or opportunities that are offered to us today and they chose to live through their children by encouraging them to join all these different clubs and sports. I know with my parents, my mom especially, kind of pushed, well encouraged me to try all these new sports and to get involved with many different clubs. I know that she only wanted what was best for me, and don’t get me wrong, I am glad she did that and still does because I would have never have made some of the friends I have or experienced all the new things. I am glad that my mom did not try to live through me literally by performing witchcraft!
In a way, my mom and I have a similar relationship to Buffy and her mom because my mom sometimes does not understand teenagers or the new advances today. Overall, I thought it was interesting how the show incorporated a common issue into the episode and made it more dramatic. I feel that it really grabbed my attention and made me feel a part of the show since I could relate to the character Amy. I am excited to see what Buffey has to come up against in the next episode!
Buffy sounds like a great series to watch, especially with all these common themes between us students and the main character.
